Esparto Lions Club Holds 83rd Annual Student Speaker Contest

The Lions Club 83rd Annual Student Speaker Contest for Esparto/Madison/Capay students will be held on Thursday, February 6th, 2020 at the Esparto Fire Station Dining Hall, 7 pm. If more than 6 students sign up to participate in the contest, a run-off contest will be held on Monday, February 3rd, at 4 pm in A-1 Mrs. Rowland’s room, at Esparto High School. Students, who are interested in participating, need to let Mrs. Rowland know by Thursday, January 9.

This Local Level contest is open to high school students in grades 9-12. The topic for this year’s contest is: "Homelessness in California: What is the Solution?" This contest has six levels to it, starting with the local Lions Club contest. The first four levels of the contest will be held in the Woodland/Yolo County area. The location of the 5th level of the contest will depend upon the area that participants are from. The final contest will be held in Modesto on Saturday, June 6th. Exact times and locations will be made available after each level as the contest progresses until June 6th.

On the February 6th Local Level, all 6 student speakers will receive an award. As a student moves forward in the contest (same topic for each level), the final student speaker on level six will have gained a total of $21,300 in cash and Scholarship. On level 1 ($100. for student speaker who continues to next level), on level 2 ($150 for student speaker who continues to next level), on level 3 ($250. for student speaker who continues to next level), on level 4 (15 student speakers $4,500. scholarship each), on level 5 (4 student speakers $6,500. scholarship each), and on the final level 6 (1 student $10,000. scholarship). In total, the scholarship funds awarded this year will be $103,500.00.
